don’t, stop
installation, sound-based, participatory (2007)
don’t, stop is an interactive and participatory collaborative sound installation. It is comprised of several small, hand-made, white boxes containing simple, home-made electronic audio circuits that can record up to 10 seconds of looping sound.
These hand-held boxes remain silent until someone records their voice onto one of them and then plugs it into the main sound system. When several of the boxes are plugged in it creates a vocal symphony, beat box, drones or a cacophonous mess; what gets created is dependent on the taste of those using it.
This project fulfils a desire to allow action to become creation within the traditional white box “don’t touch” aesthetic. It was born out of Gendron and Hendrix’s interest in disrupting the traditional west coast (Canada) conceptual art canon.
don’t, stop was originally exhibited at CSA Space in Vancouver, Canada in 2007. It has been exhibited several times, notably in 2011 at Fylkingen in Stockholm, Sweden and in 2014 at Nuit Blanche Winnipeg. It was also a Jury Recommended Work at the 2008 Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo, and a Competition Finalist at the 2008 Canary Islands Media Arts Festival in Spain.
