noise/denoise
installation, sound-based, participatory (2011)
noise/denoise is a sound installation using immersion to enable visitors to experience technological decay and vulnerability within an uncontrollable environment. Commissioned by the Centre for Contemporary Asian Arts (Centre A) in Vancouver, BC, the work consists of eight looping cassettes in shoebox tape players with the stop/eject button disabled. Participants are invited to lie on a waterbed to physically manipulate the *mix* of sonically and culturally ‘denoised’ sounds.
The ‘denoised’ sounds were created by using noise-reduction-algorithms applied to sound captured by Vancouver New Music CoLab workshop attendees, within Vancouver’s large and noisy Chinatown neighbourhood. The edited sound files were recorded to looping cassettes for the installation.
