perdere: to lose, to waste, to destroy
perdere: to lose, to waste, to destroy (2021) is a four-part experimental short abstract documentary that explores the rapidly deteriorating landscapes surrounding the town of Tuktuyaaqtuuq (Tuktoyaktuk, NT) along the northern coast of Canada. Through contemplative drone footage and a soundscape built and inspired by hydrophone and natural soundscape recordings, this work bears witness to the
inevitable effects of climate change along the shores of the Beaufort Sea. It is an environment that has been traditionally rugged and permanent but is now brittle and tenuous.
The four sections that make up the work are:
1) 138 – The length of kilometres of the Northwest Territories Highway 10 between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, NT
2) >12 – Average Increase in meters of erosion per year on islands within the Beaufort sea, NT
3) 8 – The number of Pingos or Arctic Ice Domes protected in the Pingo National Landmark
4) 15-30 – The number of meters of shoreline lost on Tuk Island over 12 years
